Fix 'Unknown Artist' & 'Unknown Album' Tags

Nothing ruins a pristine digital music library like a sea of 'Unknown Artist' and 'Unknown Album' entries. Whether you're browsing your library on a high-end smartphone, a car infotainment system, or a vintage iPod, these generic labels make it nearly impossible to find the music you want to hear.

Why Does 'Unknown Artist' Happen?

To solve the problem, we first need to understand how music players work. Most modern software doesn't actually look at the filename (e.g., 01_song_final.mp3) to determine the artist. Instead, it reads the ID3 tags—specifically the TPE1 (Artist) and TALB (Album) frames—stored inside the file's header.

If these fields are empty, corrupted, or saved in a version the player doesn't understand (like an old ID3v1 tag in a modern streaming app), the player defaults to "Unknown." This often happens with files ripped from old CDs, downloads from obscure sources, or files exported from professional DAW software without metadata settings.

Step 1: Identify the Missing Metadata

The first step is to see what's actually inside your file. Use an online tool like MP3 Tag Editor Pro to upload the problematic files. Our editor will immediately extract and display every embedded tag. If the Artist and Album fields are blank in our editor, you've found the source of the problem.

Step 2: Correcting the Tags

Now that you've identified the missing data, it's time to fix it. Here's a professional workflow for perfect results:

Fill the Basics: Enter the correct Title, Artist, and Album. Consistency is key—ensure "The Beatles" isn't accidentally entered as "Beatles, The."
The 'Album Artist' Secret: Always fill in the TPE2 (Album Artist) field. This is the most common reason albums appear split or "Unknown" in players like iTunes or Spotify. For solo artists, it's the same as the Artist; for compilations, use "Various Artists."
Embed Album Art: While you're at it, add a high-quality JPEG cover. An 'Unknown Artist' usually also has an 'Unknown' gray square where the art should be.

Step 3: Save and Re-Sync

Once you've entered the data, click Save & Download. This will generate a new version of your MP3 file with the metadata permanently embedded into the header.

Important Note

Simply fixing the file isn't enough; you must replace the old file in your music library. Delete the "Unknown" version from your phone or player, and then transfer the newly tagged version. Most players require this to trigger a fresh scan of the ID3 tags.
